Nitrous Oxide

NITROUS OXIDE AT BROCK DENTAL

Nitrous Oxide, known to many as laughing gas, is the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry. The patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.  It is a sweet smelling, non-irritating, colourless gas.  It is administered by having the patient inhale the gas, which is carefully monitored by Dr. Say. The patient is able to breathe on his or her own and remain in control of all bodily functions.  However, you will be in a euphoric state and feel completely relaxed. All feelings of fear and anxiety fade away, enabling you to sit back peacefully while you receive dental treatment. In most cases all dental work can be completed in one visit while you are sedated.

Nitrous oxide sedation is very safe and effective. Once the procedure is over the nitrous oxide will wear off fairly quickly, and you will probably be able to drive yourself home and return to your daily activities.

The advantages of using nitrous oxide include the following:

  • The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation
  • There is no after effect such as a "hangover"
  • Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart or lungs
  • Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging
  • It works rapidly, reaching the brain within 20 seconds.  In as few as two or three minutes, it's relaxation and pain-killing properties develop
