BONDED AMALGAM AND BONDED COMPOSITES
At Brock Dental, we offer bonded amalgam (silver) and bonded composite (white) fillings depending on your needs, requests and tooth adequacy.
We use bonded amalgam for a variety of reasons including:
It has been used for fillings for over 150 years
It is long lasting
It works well under pressure, especially for teeth in the back of the mouth, where chewing pressure is greatest
It is relatively inexpensive compared to other materials
Ideally, if patients have multiple caries, history of dental fillings, deep caries, poor oral hygiene with plaque and calculus deposits or requires a strong core build-up for crown and bridges, Brock Dental recommends bonded amalgam.
Bonded composite is a popular method to enhance the aesthetics of your smile. Bonding can be used to correct cracks or gaps in teeth, as a filling after a cavity has been removed, or to cover up stains or discolored teeth.
When a composite resin is used on the affected tooth or teeth, it is molded and sculpted over an adhesive bond that is placed on the tooth. After the resin has been applied, a LED light is used to harden the resin, creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. The filling is then polished for a smooth contour.
Some advantages to white fillings are:
they bond well to the tooth structure
they require less removal of tooth structure. Especially with new cavities, the size of the hole made for the filling can be dramatically smaller with composites
With the advancements in dental technology, bonding usually lasts for over 10 years. It adds strength to weakened teeth, is safe, affordable and an attractive solution for many dental problems.
